SBA exercises to deal with possible future migrants

The Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus have been performing exercises to see how well they react to a possible migrant boat landing in Cyprus, in the future.

In the latest incident, boats carrying 115 migrants bound for Greece arrived on the shores of RAF Akrotiri on 21st October, 2015.

SBA responses to potential emergencies will be tested in a series of exercises.

Chief Superintendent Nigel Avron from Western Bases Commander, SBA Police said: “… now we are better placed to deal with something if it were to take place in the future. It’s not a route into Europe, it’s not a route into Britain.

Individuals land here, we recognise that but it’s not an easy route, it’s not an escape route.”
