A sea turtle found exhausted on the rocks was discovered to have swallowed a significant amount of plastic.*

After being rescued and taken to the Taşkent Nature Park, the 90-kilogram green turtle began to recover, with its weight increasing to 97 kilograms after five weeks of treatment, Yeniduzen reports.

The Taşkent Nature Park said that the plastic which was found in the turtle’s faeces highlights the serious issue of plastic pollution in our oceans, which can be deadly for marine life. The turtle is showing promising signs of recovery and may soon return to its natural habitat.

This case emphasises the importance of protecting our oceans and raising public awareness to prevent similar incidents in the future. The park’s team continues to improve their methods for rescuing and rehabilitating animals, underscoring the impact of timely intervention and care.

*Every year, about eight million tons of plastic end up in the ocean, creating serious risks for marine life, especially sea turtles. For these creatures, ocean plastic can cause entanglement, damage their habitats, and lead to ingestion of harmful materials. Discarded plastic bags in the water often look like jellyfish, which are a common food source for turtles. Unfortunately, when a turtle eats a plastic bag, it can block their digestive system, often leading to death. There have been numerous instances where turtles were found with plastic and other trash in their stomachs and intestines. All species of sea turtles have been affected by this, with some found with plastic straws in their noses, plastic bags or toothbrushes in their stomachs, or fish hooks caught in their flippers. Plastic straws are particularly dangerous because turtles can mistake them for food, leading to choking or starvation as they feel full but have only ingested plastic. Research shows that turtles have a 50% chance of dying if they swallow more than fourteen pieces of plastic. [Wiki]
