Second Troodos firefighter dies

Government officials have confirmed that a second firefighter – who had been in the fire truck that had overturned during the Troodos fire at the weekend – has died from his injuries.

Firefighter Marios Aristotelous, 44, died after succumbing to serious injuries after the fire truck he was travelling in and fell into a ditch and overturned, as they attempted to approach the fires that had been blazing through the Troodos Mountains.

His death was announced at 11pm on Monday night at Nicosia General Hospital. His death comes almost 24 hours after his colleague, 49-year-old Andreas Sofocleous – had died in the same incident. Both were from the Lakatamia area of Nicosia – Sofocleous was a married father of three.

Another three men – who were from various emergency units and had also been on the truck – are still nursing serious injuries in hospital. Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou has confirmed that they are “out of danger”.
