Seeking Accountability For Isias Hotel Tragedy

Champion Angels - Justice march
[Champion Angels – March for Justice]
In anticipation of the upcoming trial* in Adıyaman, set to continue until April 26, a poignant march for justice took place in Nicosia, Yeniduzen reports.

This solemn procession centred around the tragic events at the Isias Hotel, where 72 lives, including 35 individuals from the Famagusta Turkish Maarif College delegation, who, since which event were designated as the “Champion Angels”, were lost in the aftermath of the February 6, 2023 earthquake.

Under the rallying cry of “We Advocate Justice for Angels,” the march commenced, its destination set for the Turkish Embassy. Echoes of solidarity resounded as close to a thousand citizens lent their voices to the cause, brandishing banners proclaiming unity with slogans like “Isias Unites Us” and “Pursuing Justice for Future Intent.”

In a sombre yet determined display, participants bore placards bearing messages such as “Isias Stands as Our Collective Struggle” and “Marching Towards a Just Tomorrow.”

*The families of those who perished in the hotel have demanded higher sentences for those found guilty of neglect when constructing the hotel which lies in an earthquake zone.

According to ‘‘, “Adiyaman has a very high level of seismic activity. There have been at least six  earthquakes in the region above magnitude 7 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 20 to 25 years”. [Ed.]
