Siber hopes that Guterres’ report on the Cyprus talks will be objective

Speaker of the Assembly, Sibel Siber, met with President Mustafa Akıncı yesterday, to hold discussions ahead of the President’s forthcoming visit to New York.

Speaking to the press following the meeting, Siber said that they are waiting for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ report to be released, adding that they hope this report will explain the present situation unequivocally.

Noting that the negotiating process takes place under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary General and other observers, Siber reiterated that the desired solution, which was based on United Nations parameters, could not be reached.

Stating that the concrete facts in this regard were discussed by President Akıncı, political party leaders, independent observers and herself several times, Siber added that all parties at the meeting were in agreement that they would need to work hard to continue to uphold the Turkish Cypriots’ social existence in the world and push for the embargoes to be lifted.

Finally, the Speaker of the Assembly emphasised: “We expect the United Nations General Secretary’s report on Cyprus to be objective.”
