Society currently does not believe it holds power and there is a leadership issue, former Prime Minister and Speaker of Parliament Sibel Siber stated. “A leader is someone who confidently shares project changes that benefit society with the public without hesitation”, she said

Siber, a guest on Sabah Postasi, hosted by Gökhan Altıner on Kibris Postasi TV, emphasised, “There used to be a sense of community. Back then, the economic prosperity of society was not higher, but there was a strong sense of belonging”.

Relations with Turkey

Siber pointed out that the perception of “Turkey commands, TRNC obeys” undermines the perception of democracy in society. “These perceptions negatively impact relations”, she said. Siber noted that the accuracy of these perceptions is less important than the fact that they exist, adding, “There is a global perception that the TRNC is a subordinate administration of Turkey”.

The Cyprus Problem

Highlighting that the Cyprus issue has reached a deadlock, Siber said, “Federation is already a Turkish proposal”. She stressed that “The only solution is either federation or a two-state solution”, indicating that doors should not be closed and that new ideas are needed. However, “If we close the doors by rejecting the federation, we will be giving the Greek side an advantage”,  she stated.
