A meeting, will be held Athens in the coming weeks between Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos and his Greek Cypriot and Israeli counterparts, Ioannis Kasoulides (R) and Avigdor Lieberman (L), for talks on closer cooperation on energy and other issues. ‘ANSAmed’ online reports.
In response to Turkey’s marine activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, a pact was signed in Cairo over the weekend by Greek, Cypriot and Egyptian heads of state.
‘Ekathimerini’ online reports that an initial round of talks in Athens on Wednesday between Greek, Cypriot and Israeli diplomats which culminated in a joint statement condemning the presence offshore Cyprus of the Turkish seismic vessel ’Barbaros’.
In their statement, the diplomats expressed “concern for illegal actions and provocations in the sea waters of the Eastern Mediterranean in violation of international law.”
Turkey’s claiming its rights to marine territory off Cyprus, where Greek Cypriot authorities are licensed to drill for oil and gas, was also discussed in the European Parliament on Wednesday.
MEPs are expected to adopt a resolution on Thursday, urging Turkey to show restraint and respect international laws.
