UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar, has said she would like to discuss the implications, assessments and the how to proceed with UNSG Antonio Guterres after her separate meetings with President Akinci and President Anastasiades.
She met with both Cypriot community leaders before they head to New York to meet Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this month.
Spehar also noted that Guterres wants to know what were the two leaders’ reflections on the Cyprus Conference in Crans-Montana and if Akinci and Anastasiades had any concrete ideas about how to restart the Cyprus negotiations.
She made a brief statement after her meeting with President Mustafa Akıncı and said that the interview was good.
Asked what Guterres was looking for by meeting both community leaders in New York, Spehar said he was looking for a clearer picture from all parties involved and to see what could be done at this stage.
Spehar, however, voiced the UN’s respect for the solution process, which was characterised as being Cypriot-led, and stated that Guterres first wanted to hear the leaders’ ideas, and then to form his own.
She added that the UN goodwill mission in Cyprus is continuing.
