Syria aims to bring Turkey into regional conflict

Wednesday brought the latest blow to the already strained relationship between Turkey and Syria when mortar shells were fired into the residential district of Akcakale in Turkey, killing five people including three children.

Responding to the attack, Turkish military units returned fire at a number of targets behind the border with Syria. In four days of skirmishes, Turkish troops have also launched mortar rounds at Syria in response to other attacks in rural areas of Turkey’s Hatay province.

A senior advisor to Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Erdogan, tweeted, “Turkey has no interest in starting a war with Syria…but is capable of protecting its borders and will retaliate when necessary” – however, the latest developments highlight a dramatic escalation between the neighbouring countries.
