36 Syrian refugees who had crossed the border into the TRNC on 27th October were returned to South Cyprus yesterday, ‘Kibris Postasi’ reports.
The refugees tried to resist because they wanted to stay in the TRNC with the aim of going on to Turkey.
The 36 were among 345 people rescued from a fishing boat in distress in rough seas off Paphos on 25th September.
According to the paper, the refugees were transferred by bus to the Ledra Palace crossing around 1.30 pm in order to be returned to South Cyprus, but due to the heavy rain they had to stay for some time at the House of Cooperation’s building.
The refugees refused to return to the South creating tension with the police who finally forced them back across the border.
