The Turkish Cypriot Teacher’s trade union (KTOS), education secretary Burak Mavis, in a written statement on Wednesday, condemned the amendment law for the religious affairs department.
The amendment had recently been debated at the TRNC assembly.
He said that the union “would not accept religion becoming a political instrument nor education becoming a religious instrument”.
The TRNC education office recently decreed that secondary school pupils, who are going on a trip to Turkey this summer should should travel in separate groups according to gender.
The teachers unions said:
“Do they think that this excursion, which is organised in such a manner so as to insinuate that our youngsters are possible immoral deviants, is in alignment with our regulations?”
The Turkish Youth and Sports Ministry has been organising and paying for these excursions since 2012.
