President of the Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS), Selma Eylem, recently expressed the union’s rejection of a resolution passed by the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) concerning Cyprus, Yeniduzen reports.

In a written statement, Selma Eylem emphasised the union’s desire to build a future free from violence and sorrow for their children, and reaffirmed its commitment to a bi-communal, bi-zonal federal solution based on political equality in Cyprus.

Eylem’s statement reads as follows:

“Recently, a resolution was passed in the TBMM on the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus military operation, claiming that the two-state solution is the only path to lasting peace. According to the ‘Guarantee Agreement’ signed in Zurich on July 11, 1959, Greece, the United Kingdom, and Turkey recognise and guarantee the independence, territorial integrity, and security of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as the situation established by the fundamental articles of its Constitution.

“The signatories also agreed to prohibit any actions that would lead to the division of the island. However, the guarantors have failed to uphold their commitments, orchestrating coups, conflicts, and wars under divisive policies, which have caused years of suffering, tears, bloodshed, destruction, and loss on our island. Thousands of our people have lost their lives, and many more have been displaced due to the divisive and separatist policies of Enosis and Taksim.

“Policies filled with separatism, chauvinism, and disregard for the realities of Cyprus and international agreements only lead to conflict and war.

“As Turkish Cypriots, we do not want conflict or war on our island. We reject the seizure of our autonomy, systematic assimilation and integration policies, the resolution aimed at completely taking over the northern part of our island and maintaining the status quo, and the dismissal of consensus points reached during years of UN-mediated negotiations. We have been resisting these issues for years and will continue to do so”.

We aspire to live in peace on our island through a united federal Cyprus solution based on the political equality of the two communities, as outlined by UN resolutions. Our goal is to create a future that spares our children from experiencing bloodshed and tears“.
