The black smoke emitted from the Teknecik Power Plant has become thicker in recent weeks, raising serious health concerns among the local residents. Speaking to Yeniduzen, they stressed that they had a fundamental right to life and that their lives were in danger.

EL-SEN officials have explained that the black smoke is due to poor-quality fuel, which is nearly depleted. Maintenance is also impossible because of a lack of spare parts, leading to the increased emissions.

The smoke particularly affects the Çatalköy and Esentepe areas, where residents are increasingly worried about their health. Yeniduzen’s on-site visit confirmed that Esentepe, with its new housing projects, is blanketed in black smoke. Many vacant villas in Beşparmak village reflect locals’ reluctance to live in the polluted environment.

Residents breathing in the smoke daily voiced their health concerns to the newspaper. They fear the risk of cancer and insist on immediate action. They describe the power plant’s emissions as poisonous and call for a more advanced system, akin to those in developed countries. The urgent need for a filter is emphasised repeatedly.

A group of locals stressed the following problems; The constant smoke from the Teknecik Power Plant is a daily burden for us. Many of us already suffer from health issues like heart disease and diabetes, and now we’re forced to inhale chemical smoke as well. Despite our persistent complaints, the authorities have done nothing. They promise action, but nothing ever changes, and our health continues to deteriorate. The black smoke is poisoning us, increasing our risk of cancer.

The situation is unbearable. The smoke has worsened lately, accompanied by a foul smell. This harmful gas makes it difficult to breathe and poses a significant health risk. We desperately need the state to take immediate action. We should be using clean energy solutions like solar panels, as many other parts of the world do, instead of this outdated system.

The power plant is spreading poison across the region. Even those of us who live in Kyrenia are affected when we visit Çatalköy and Esentepe. The smoke and smells are carried by the wind, making the air quality even worse. Cancer rates are rising, and it’s clear that a filter at the power plant is urgently needed. Public health should be the top priority.

The environmental damage caused by the Teknecik Power Plant is significant. Although installing a filter is said to cost $50 million, the resulting waste problem remains unresolved, contaminating our homes and food. The authorities must act now. Disease rates are soaring, and we need a modern, efficient system. Cyprus is one of the sunniest places on earth, yet we continue to rely on an outdated system. Where are our taxes going?

Breathing the smoke from the power plant is incredibly uncomfortable. It creates a dark cloud that covers Esentepe and pollutes our natural environment. As a country that relies on tourism, we are damaging our own nature. The stench from nearby hotels and garbage further harms our health. A filter for the power plant is essential. The government talks a lot but does nothing, putting our health at risk.

The current state of the power plant is unacceptable in this day and age. It’s embarrassing to face such primitive conditions. Our politicians are neglecting our health, allowing the roads to reek of sewage while building new hotels. The dense smoke is essentially a form of murder, and it’s high time something is done about it.

On July 24, the Mayor or Çatalköy-Esentepe, Ceyhun Kırok, issued a statement regarding the ongoing issue of harmful emissions from the Teknecik Power Plant, demanding urgent action.
