Ten Egyptian fishermen, including the boat’s skipper were arrested for illegal fishing two days ago. The men were brought before court.
They were arrested for fishing illegally with their boat, the ‘Al Amira Nurhan’, seven miles north-east of Zafer Burnu in the Karpaz. A one ton haul including shrimp and blue tuna was discovered on the boat. The court ordered that the fishermen remain in custody for two days.
Commenting on the issue, head of the Turkish Cypriot fishermen’s Union Kemal Atakan, said that the Egyptians should receive a heavy penalty in order to deter similar cases in the future. He added that illegal fishing undermines the livelihood of locals who fish for a living.
Unauthorised fishing is a perennial problem for Turkish Cypriot fishermen as illegal fishing depletes stocks and local income.
