Commenting on the recent decision taken by the TRNC Foreign Ministry to impose a tariff on goods sent to Greek Cypriots and Maronites in the TRNC from the south, leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhurman, has said that the only concern of foreign minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu is hatred and revenge.
In statements to Kanal SIM television, Erhurman said that Ertugruloglu does not care about the Turkish Cypriot exports or their representation abroad and added: “His only concern is hatred and revenge and not the opening of the Turkish Cypriots to the world. And we are obliged to watch this”.
Meanwhile, referring to a statement recently made by Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktas, regarding the per capita income in the TRNC, Erhurman noted that even the country’s administrators do not know what are the population numbers and described Denktas’ statement as irrational, because these numbers are the calculation of the national income based on the assumption that the businessmen, who earn a lot of money, and the unemployed people are the same.
Referring to the issue of citizenships, Erhurman noted that the position of his party is to extend from five to ten years, the time period before a person gains the right to take citizenship.
He argued that there are two issues regarding citizenship granted by the National Unity Party (UBP)/Democratic Party (DP) coalition government. The one is the 940 exceptional citizenships granted by the Council of Ministers without any justification and the other is the citizenships granted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
He noted that the latter should also be published in the official gazette and added that his party will file a lawsuit for the annulment of these citizenships as well.
