Thousand of trees destroyed by fires in 2016

Thousand of trees were destroyed by fires in the TRNC in 2016. The majority of those fires were caused by careless and neglectful behaviour.

According to Forestry Department statistics, 60.8 hectares of land were destroyed by fire last year. There were 24 fires on private land and 14 forest fires, most of which took place in the summer.

Last year, 461,041 saplings were planted throughout the TRNC and the Forestry Department has reminded everyone about the need for care, particularly in the summer months.
