TRNC Minister of Transport, Erhan Arıklı, has declared that the time is ripe for Turkey to establish air and naval bases in North Cyprus. He expressed his hope that this matter would be addressed and resolved by the anniversary of the Peace Operation. Arıklı reminded everyone that the inter-communal negotiations, which lasted over fifty years, came to an end in July 2017 when the Greek Cypriots abandoned the talks at Crans-Montana in Switzerland.
Arıklı noted that while South Cyprus is advocating for the continuation of negotiations from where they left off at Crans-Montana, it is simultaneously engaging in military buildup and signing defence cooperation agreements with various countries. These agreements include granting air, land, and naval bases on its territory. He emphasised that the latest development is the establishment of a naval base in the Mari region along the Larnaca coast.
Arıklı recalled that it was announced that South Cyprus had reached an agreement with the US and the EU to construct a naval base with Greece, a claim that was not denied. He stated, “From this point onward, it is time to establish air and naval bases in the TRNC, in cooperation with Turkey. Resolving this issue on the anniversary of our glorious victory on July 20 is our greatest hope“.
Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, during his visit to Southern Cyprus, finalised an agreement with his Cypriot counterpart, Vasilis Palmas, regarding the ‘Mari Base.’ The agreement involves the deployment of warships along the Mari coast near Larnaca.
As reported by Philenews, both nations aim to showcase their collaboration in the Eastern Mediterranean through tangible projects. The proposed ‘Mari Naval Base’ symbolises the enhanced military partnership between Greece and Southern Cyprus.
Minister Palmas reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to uphold peace, security, stability, and cooperation in the region.
