Today is the 43rd Anniversary of the 20 July Peace Mission

The 43rd anniversary of the 20th of July Peace Operation is being celebrated in the capital Lefkoşa and a variety of celebratory and commemorative events will take place in districts as well.

Ceremonies are being held across the Republic to mark 43 years since Turkish forces landed in Girne as part of an operation to save Turkish Cypriots from annihilation.

At noon, a 21 gun salute takes place followed by an address to the nation by President Mustafa Akıncı on BRT.

Separate ceremonies will be held in the late afternoon at the Boğaz Martyrdom, Dr. Fazıl Küçük Monument and the Rauf Raif Denktaş Monument.

The first ceremony will take place in front of the Lefkoşa Atatürk Monument followed by a similar ceremony at the Martyrs Monument.

At 9.30am a military parade will take place at the Dr. Fazıl Küçük Boulevard.

The annual dawn vigil began at 9.30 pm last night at the Yavuz Çıkarma beach where Turkish forces first landed in 1974.

Those who lost their lives for their nation will be commemorated during the event.
