Following a tragic traffic accident in Gemikonağı, which claimed the life of 26-year-old Naveed Akbar, one of two individuals struck by a drunk driver, Aycan Taliman, Akbar’s fiancée, made a plea for justice, Kibris Postasi reports.
Taliman recounted that Akbar had planned to spend the evening by the beach with friends, intending to return home for suhoor during Arefe. However, their plans were shattered by a devastating accident in the late hours.
The intoxicated driver lost control, crashing into Naveed Akbar and his companions who were sitting on a bench.
Akbar lost his life at the scene, leaving Taliman to share her profound grief with Kibris Postasi.
In the aftermath, Taliman revealed that police disclosed the driver was a Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) soldier. She expressed her dismay, saying, “Initially, we were told the soldier was detained. Later, we learned his superiors intervened and whisked him away. How can justice prevail in such circumstances?“
Continuing, Taliman highlighted the impact of the driver’s military status on the pursuit of justice.
“TSK soldier or not, it’s appalling that he was not only driving under the influence but also arguing with his girlfriend in the car”, Taliman remarked. “He pulled the handbrake when he lost control, but at that speed, a car doesn’t just stop. It ploughed into Naveed“.
She asked, “How many more TSK soldiers will evade accountability simply because of their uniform? The police admitted they’re powerless against soldiers. If they can’t act, and if the state won’t act, how can I, as a citizen, seek justice?“
Taliman struggled to convey her anguish, saying:
“I can’t process my grief, can’t shed tears. I won’t find peace until that killer is behind bars. Yesterday, I went to identify Naveed. His eyes were wide open, staring into eternity. I closed them, but it didn’t bring closure. Until his killer faces justice, Naveed won’t rest peacefully. How does anyone endure seeing their loved one like that, cold and lifeless?“
