North Cyprus News - Reynar defends Afrika chief ed leventThe hearings regarding the lawsuit filed against the publisher Sener Levent and editor-in-chief Ali Osman Tabak of Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Afrika’ for publishing a cartoon, which had insulted Turkish President Erdogan, began yesterday at North Nicosia district court.

Police inspector Isa Sevindik told the court that after the publication of the cartoon on 8 December 2017, the Turkish Embassy in North Nicosia had filed a complaint that the Turkish President and the Turkish people had been offended.

The newspaper’s lawyer Tacan Reynar filed an objection when Sevindik attempted to submit this complaint as evidence. In his column, Sener Levent recalls that the cartoon depicted an ancient Greek statue urinating on Erdogan’s head.

The cartoon was originally published in a Greek newspaper during President Erdogan’s visit to Athens in early December 2017.
