TRNC asks Turkey for loan to compensate farmers

The TRNC government has asked for a 50 million TL loan from Turkey. The government promised to repay the loan in 2016. Leader of the CTP coalition Mehmet Ali Talat said that the money was urgently needed to make compensation payments to farmers for damage to wheat and barley crops.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister, responsible for TRNC affairs, Tugrul Turkes, said that necessary reforms in the agricultural sector in the TRNC needed to be implemented first. Turkish daily ‘Milliyet’ said that Ankara had been waiting for three years to see the beginning of reforms in the TRNC’s agricultural sector. When those are in place, aid would be given, it said.

TRNC Minister of Agriculture Erkut Sahali told ‘Milliyet’ that the country needs the money before the reforms. He explained that they will announce agricultural reforms by the end of the month. He added that the water coming from Turkey is very important for the agricultural sector.
