TRNC direct flights not linked to Maras deal

A spokesman for the South Cyprus government has refuted recent press reports that the European Commission is trying to broker a deal between South Cyprus and Turkey to return Maras (the fenced-off area of Famagusta) to the Greek Cypriots in exchange for direct flights to Ercan airport.

He stressed that it is an unfortunate thing to engage in a public debate on the matter, adding that his government’s views as they were expressed by President Anastasiades or the Foreign Minister to all their interlocutors or as they were conveyed to the Greek Premier in view of his contacts at the White House were not related and did not relate to Ercan airport.

The spokesman also added that the Foreign Minister’s documents that might be used on the negotiating table should not be the object of a public debate.
