Turkish Cypriot politician Albay Durduran has been active in politics since 1975. He was an MP at the assembly until 1990. Durduran was the leader of the Communal Liberation Party (TKP), which changed its name to the Social Democratic Party (TDP). He is one of the founding members of the New Cyprus Party (YKP).
Asked to comment on today’s politics, Durduran said that unfortunately for some years, politics has become bankrupt, adding that you cannot trust politicians.
Referring to the Cyprus problem, Durduran said that the Cyprus problem is an international problem. As to how it should be solved, all the states and institutions from the UN to the EU have made decisions, he noted, and added that a solution that works for them should be found; otherwise the present situation will continue.
Replying to a question as to whether or not the Turkish Cypriot side is ready for a solution, Durduran said: “Unfortunately, the Turkish Cypriot side is not ready for this solution. The Turkish Cypriot side says that it wants a solution by joining in the chorus. However, here there is not a trace of a state which thinks that there will be a solution very soon. The Turkish Cypriots have learned that they should look to actions and not to talk”.
On the question of what is the most important problem in the negotiations, Durduran said: “The most important problem in the negotiations is that Turkey will not give up controlling here”.
He concluded by saying that according to him, the TRNC’s biggest problem is that it does not govern itself, it is governed by Turkey – a fact which has been covered up.
