TRNC needs EU help to adopt EU laws: Nami

Following the TRNC’s Foreign Minister Ozdil Nami’s recent to visit to Brussels he said that he has asked for help from EU officials with regard to adopting EU legislation and its implementation.

“There is a need for the Cyprus Turkish founding state to be prepared for the adoption and implementation of the EU legislation otherwise the Green Line may remain even after a solution is found and the EU acquis communautaire may be delayed in the North”, he stated.

Nami said that he had called on the EU to help create a more effective mechanism to enable the TRNC to align itself with EU norms. He added that when the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, Stephan Fule arrives in Cyprus in April, that issue would be explored further.

Underlining that in practice, the EU should be supporting the settlement process, Nami said: “In order for this to happen then direct contact is inevitable“.
