An announcement by Turkish PM Erdogan regarding the reduction of military service time has led to speculation on similar moves in the TRNC.
Currently the rules are that privates serve 15 months, while higher ranks serve 12 months and exempt soldiers one month.
To avoid military service, many young men have chosen to live abroad. Those who have overseas citizenship can escape conscription by paying £3000 or £2000 if aged over 31. TRNC youths in higher education can pay £4000 and serve for one month.
The Minister for Justice Turban Erhurman, was asked if changes in military service for Turkey would affect the TRNC. He said that there would only be a review if requested by the Council of Ministers.
