TRNC officials have rebuffed claims from Greek Cypriot media regarding a purported “UN proposal for a new solution“, Turkish national public broadcaster ‘TRT’ reports.

They stated that no formal meeting proposal had been put forward by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The TRNC’s Foreign Ministry dismissed assertions in Greek Cypriot media suggesting that Guterres had presented a “fresh solution” plan in Cyprus, only to have it rejected by the Turkish side, leading to a departure from the two-state solution and altering the required conditions.

The ministry asserted that the Greek Cypriot leadership had circulated misleading reports in the media concerning “the National Council meeting of the Greek Cypriot Administration“, with the aim of portraying themselves as the “demanding party” on the international stage regarding the Cyprus issue.

Additionally, the statement clarified that no other activities had taken place apart from those led by the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, in Cyprus.

Furthermore, it refuted claims from Greek Cypriot media suggesting that “the Turkish side only mentions ‘sovereign equality’ rather than a two-state solution“, branding them as solely the creation of the Greek Cypriot leadership’s imagination.

The statement emphasised that the reaffirmation of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot side is a prerequisite for formal negotiations.

It underscored that since there hasn’t been an official meeting proposal from the UN Secretary-General, assertions that Turkish Cypriots rejected the UN’s informal tripartite or five-party conference proposal while the Greek Cypriots accepted it are without basis.
