TRNC’s Hellim trade could be undermined by South

Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry chairman Ali Cirali has said that the chamber is against the Greek Cypriot Ministry of Agriculture being the registration authority for halloumi/hellim.

He added that a supervisory committee should be established where the EU will appoint registration for the cheese in consultation with Turkish Cypriot NGOs.

Cirali expressed the fear that if the Republic of Cyprus becomes the authority for registration, then this may result in abuses.

He said that the export of halloumi represents 25% of the total exports of the TRNC, adding that the income of 17% of the population derives from the halloumi/hellim trade.
