Director of T&T, Serhat Özçelik, the company owned by Emrullah Turanlı, which built and operates the new terminal at Ercan airport, has claimed that the company owes no money to state electricity authority Kib-Tek and that their electricity bills are issued every three months instead of monthly. However, Hüseyin Peksever, General Secretary of El-Sen, countered that T&T owes money to both Kib-Tek and the public, Kibris Postasi reports.
Speaking on a TV broadcast, Özçelik asserted that Ercan Airport management, under T&T, has met all commitments, pays debts on time, and has never owed money to Kib-Tek. He claimed T&T is the real victim regarding electricity issues.
Speaking to Kibris Postasi, El-Sen General Secretary Hüseyin Peksever refuted Özçelik’s claims, stating that T&T still has restructured debt to Ercan Airport being paid in instalments. He warned that missing a payment would revert the debt to its original terms.
Peksever also dismissed Özçelik’s claim about receiving electricity bills every three months, insisting that bills are sent monthly and that T&T is lying about accumulated bills.
Peksever highlighted that Kib-Tek doesn’t provide permanent electricity to unlicensed or incomplete buildings in order to encourage their completion, not to cause hardship. He noted that Ercan Airport has security deficiencies and hasn’t passed inspection, yet it was switched to the normal tariff.
He criticised the special treatment for Ercan Airport, questioning if unfinished private constructions would receive the same benefit. Peksever emphasised the need for conformity to British standards and held key officials responsible for any potential safety issues due to this decision, naming Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı, Economy and Energy Minister Olgun Amcaoğlu, and Labor Minister Sadık Gardiyanoğlu.
