“The Cyprus problem could be solved tomorrow if the other side made the necessary compromises that would not leave winners and losers,” Greek Cypriot President Anastasiades has said.
Referring to speculation that there could be a referendum on a Cyprus settlement by March 2016 and the South’s general elections in May could postponed, Anastasiades said that there may not be a solution by 2016, however he did not rule out a possible settlement by next summer.
President Mustafa Akinci’s election had given a new impetus to the Cyprus negotiations, as he was in favour of a settlement, however, it was Turkey, that remained intransigent, Anastasiades said.
He also pointed out that Cyprus would block the opening of new chapters for Turkey’s efforts to join the EU, if Ankara does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus.
