Turkey remains adamant on remaining as Cyprus guarantor

Ankara is resolute on its policy regarding guarantees in Cyprus and keeping Turkish troops on the island after a Cyprus settlement, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said.

Speaking to Greek Cypriot daily ‘Phileleftheros’, Cavusoglu said cited past history to back his view that: “Existing guarantee and alliance conventions provide a strong framework for ensuring the island’s future stability”.

He added that also based on the results of recent polls in the north: “The conservative majority of the Turkish Cypriots will not accept an arrangement without guarantees”.

Turkey would intervene if it was deemed necessary, Cavusoglu warned and reiterated his country’s insistence that Turkish nationals in Cyprus be awarded the EU’s four freedoms.
