Turkey to elect new PM today

Following Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s announcement that he will relinquish his role as party leader, the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) will formally elect Transport, Maritime and Communications Minister Binali Yıldırım as the new party chairman in the party’s second emergency convention on Sunday.

The AK Party announced on Thursday that Binali Yıldırım will be the sole candidate for chairman at its emergency convention.

Yıldırım is set to replace current Chairman and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, who announced earlier this month that he is stepping down “out of necessity“.

During his speech at the convention, Davutoğlu pointed out that the cause of AK Party is above all offices and positions, while noting that the sole reason for holding an emergency convention six months after an election victory, was to maintain the unity of AK Party.
