President Dervis Eroglu has described the comments of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, made when he recently visited Cyprus, against the system of guarantees as an “attack”. He added that they were “.. an indication that the Greek-Greek Cypriot mentality remains the same as in the past”.
Eroglu who was speaking while visiting the old town of Nicosia, said that Turkey’s continuing active and effective guarantees as part of a potential solution to the Cyprus problem is sine qua non for the Turkish side.
He repeated his accusation that the Cyprus problem has not been solved because of the stance of the Greek Cypriot side and Greece which supports the Greek Cypriots.
Eroglu pointed to a particular comment which the Greek Prime Minister had made at a joint press conference with President Anastasiades at the Presidential Palace, as being very significant. “He said that the relations between Turkey and Greece pass through Cyprus”, he noted, adding that Prime Minister Tsipras “also opposed the existing system of guarantees which include Turkey’s active and effective guarantees“.
