Turkish Cypriots support Gezi Park protesters

Thousands of Turks are currently protesting against the proposed conversion of a small park (Gezi Park) in the Taksim area of Istanbul, into a shopping mall.

This protest has grown despite harsh measures by police and now has an element of protest against the ruling AKP party in Turkey.

Yesterday evening there were demonstrations of support by the citizens of TRNC. This was organised entirely through social media channels such as Twitter and held in Kugulu Park.

As news of the demonstration widened, there was a second demonstration in Kugulu Park around 3am which resulted in a protest march to the Turkish embassy in Nicosia.

Demonstrators were met by a heavy police presence and eventually dispersed peacefully.
