Turkish Lira Crisis Hits State Schools

North Cyprus News - Cemal Ozyigit - TDPThe new academic year is beginning with a shortage of teaching staff. There are only 132 teachers positions filled while there is a need for 180 teachers in schools.

Minister for Education Cemal Ozyigit said that the remaining positions will be filled by private contracts. He added that unfortunately, the economic crisis, which is the result of the devaluation of the Turkish lira, is reflected in education as well.

As regards the printing of new school books, no one has made any offers for tenders made by the government for print orders. This is again, due to the fall of the lira. The minister assured that companies would be paid for their services.

Ozyigit also said that tenders would be put out very soon to build new schools. Elsewhere it was reported that some contractors had not completed new school buildings and renovations because of the soaring cost of building materials.
