Turkish water project to be managed independently

Management for the Turkish water project and other water resources will be under the control of a new, independent and autonomous organisation, leader of the CTP-BG Mehmet Ali Talat has said.

According to his party’s press office, Talat who met with the Mayor of North Nicosia Mehmet Harmanci to discuss the issue of water management, said that the government had a comprehensive policy on water management on its agenda. He explained that the Department for Water Affairs would continue to control catchment areas, planning of reclamation areas and improve underground water resources. However, he noted that the new management for the project would be independent and not state-run.

Meanwhile, Turkish daily ‘Gunes’ reports that the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP) Huseyin Ozgurgun also met with Mayor Harmanci yesterday.

According to statements issued by the UBP’s press office, Ozgurgun emphasised the importance of the water transfer project. He said that it is a great project which could benefit not only the Turkish Cypriots but the whole of Cyprus.

Referring to the administration of the water, Ozgurgun said that preparatory work should be made and added that this issue should be solved by Turkey and the TRNC.
