UBP Fails to Elect Speaker: Crisis Deepens

The government, with support from 29 MPs, has been unable to elect a Speaker of the Assembly due to internal conflicts, despite several attempts over the course of the day, Yeniduzen reported.

In a vote within the UBP party, current Speaker of the Assembly Zorlu Töre received 13 votes and Faiz Sucuoğlu got 10. Frustrated by the outcome, Sucuoğlu left, stating he wouldn’t return to the assembly.

Töre failed to get enough votes in four rounds of voting, so a fifth round was not held. UBP then nominated Kutlu Evren, but he received even fewer votes (22 in favour, 26 against), leading to another failure.

This political deadlock has created a crisis, with UBP unable to find a majority to elect a Speaker throughout the day.

Tufan Erhürman, leader of the main opposition party CTP, commenting on the situation, said, “This film is over“, criticising the government’s inability to resolve the crisis. He emphasised that the government has lost its legitimacy and should return to the people for new elections. Erhürman also pointed out that instead of focusing on governing the country, the UBP is engaged in a power struggle for seats. He called the whole process a “political farce” and stressed that the public should not have to endure this any longer.
