Contingency plans to build a port at RAF Akrotiri have been drawn up in case Britain leaves the EU with no trade agreement.
A small port already exists at the Sovereign Base but this would need to be enlarged at a cost of tens of millions of pounds.
Presently, equipment and other items bound for the British base pass through South Cyprus’ commercial ports, however, in the event that Britain leaves the EU without a trade deal, EU customs and inspections would pose a serious threat to operations, officials say.
According to a report published by ‘The Times’ the MoD is thought to have provisionally earmarked a claim on the £1.5bn contingency funds for the project, in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
