Union rejects minimum wage increase

The Federation of Turkish Labour Unions, TURK-SEN, has, today, rejected the recently announced new minimum wage.

Union chief Arslan Bicakli issued a written statement calling the new increase a ‘poverty wage’. He said that the government was taunting the workers and making their lives a misery.

Mr Bicakli said that he would be using his legal rights to formally reject the latest increase. He argued that with no increases for the past two years, and even with government produced inflation figures running at 18%, the purchasing power of citizens had dropped by around 40%.

He also claimed that the minimum wage Commission should have met every year, in accordance with the constitution.
