UNSG hopes for Cyprus settlement before retiring from office

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that he has spent much time and energy on the Cyprus problem. Cyprus is “the only other divided country besides the Korean peninsula” where Ban himself comes from.

According to the CNA, Ban said that the Cyprus talks were “moving smoothly and well.” He said that he hoped a Cyprus agreement would be reached before the end of his term in office this year.

The two Cypriot leaders, President Nicos Anastasiades and President Mustafa Akinci will have a critical meeting on 14th September 14 concluding a round of intensive talks over the past month, that will point out the direction of the negotiations.

Both leaders will meet the UNSG in New York, around 26th September.
