Recently appointed Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide, will make his first visit to Cyprus between 5 and 8th September, the SGs Good Offices Mission in Cyprus on announced Friday, ‘Famagusta Gazette’ reports.
Eide is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with both presidents and their teams, the press release states.
Prior to his visit to Cyprus, Eide will be in New York between 2nd and 4th September for discussions with the UN Secretary-General and other senior UN official including the SG’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Lisa Buttenheim.
“As a consequence, the United Nations has requested a short postponement of the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities meeting currently scheduled for 2nd September 2014,” it is added.
During his visit to the island, the UNSG Special Adviser will consult with the leaders on an appropriate date for their September meeting, the press release concluded.
The UN led Cyprus negotiations were re-started in February 2014 and are currently seen to be virtually deadlocked.
