Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kudret Özersay, has sent a letter to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, regarding the Cyprus 2018 Human Rights Report, which is published annually by the United States State Department.
In his letter, Özersay welcomed the positive considerations regarding North Cyprus, views and constructive criticism of the Turkish Cypriot side were put forward. The letter also touched upon efforts to bring the country to a more advanced level in terms of human rights.
He noted however, that the fact that unjust and inhuman isolation imposed on the Turkish Cypriots, which is the most significant human rights violation on the island, is not included in the report, is a major deficiency of the report. Isolation that infects all areas of the Turkish Cypriots’ lives, nourishes the crisis of deep mistrust between the two Cypriot communities and prevents a solution based on negotiation.
