Water management debacle delays funding by Turkey

Disagreement between the TRNC and Turkey on water management have delayed Turkey’s payments to the North.

The economic protocol covering the period 2016-18 remains unsigned. This leaves the government unable to pay salaries for February.

According to Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis, Prime Minister Kalyoncu has requested a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. However, he has not yet received a reply.

Havadis asked the Minister of Finance about the salaries, but the minister declined to answer questions on payment of staff salaries. He said that PM Kalyoncu has been informed about the financial situation and incomes and added that “the prime minister will make the necessary announcement to the public on this issue”.
