Water project viability depends on the cost of electricity: Tatar

Former Finance Ministers Ersin Tatar and Ahmet Uzun, have said that electricity conveyed from Turkey will benefit North Cyprus. Speaking to Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Star Kıbrıs’ Tatar noted that North Cyprus will strengthen strategically, politically and economically, while Uzun stated that he supported the water and electric transfer from Turkey, however he added that only within certain parameters would this be beneficial, ‘Kibris Postasi’ reports.

Tatar stated that the project to convey electricity by undersea pipes had been considered during the National Unity Party’s (UBP) period in government and that he was part of the economic collaboration protocol of 2013-2015. He continued that electricity production in North Cyprus is fuelled by oil imported by tankers, the cost of which is constantly on the rise, therefore this was the reason for the high cost of electricity in the TRNC.

He emphasised that the water project’s success is linked to electricity supply. “The success of the water project is proportional to the electric cost. If electricity is expensive than the cost of pumping the water also increases. The water and electricity coming from Turkey together will bring success to the projects and reduce the cost of electricity,” Tatar concluded.
