Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkul highlighted the ongoing water supply problem in the Kyrenia region, Yeniduzen reports. In his statement, Şenkul questioned, “Why can’t we get enough water? You say the problem is solved, but many pump stations aren’t working due to low pressure. Who will address this issue, if not to us, then to the citizens?” He directed these questions to the government.

The statement reads:

Good evening, Kyrenia. After the recent repair on the line supplying water from the Geçitköy reservoir, our water supply has significantly decreased. Our team has been working tirelessly for 8 days, with only a few hours of sleep, yet we still cannot provide water to certain streets and sites in central Kyrenia. In some areas, water is being distributed alternately.

Despite the efforts of the TRNC Water Works employees, there is a persistent problem with the water distribution from Geçitköy, referred to by the citizens as Turkish water. I urge the Minister of Agriculture, who is responsible for this issue, to make a statement. What is the problem? Why can’t we get enough water? You claim the issue is resolved, but many pump stations remain non-operational due to insufficient pressure. Who will explain this to the citizens if not to us? I ask again, “WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

On June 4 it was announced that a malfunction at the Geçitköy Pumping Station had led to water shortages in North  Cyprus.

In a written statement, the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources announced that water cuts would occur because of a malfunction at the Geçitköy Pumping Station as part of the Water Supply Project.

Due to the lack of necessary maintenance on local dams, the water demand in the north of the island, which relies on  water piped undersea from Turkey, could not be met due to the malfunction.
