Why does Akinci remain silent?

General Secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Trade Union (KTOS), Sener Elcil, has criticised President Mustafa Akinci’s for remaining silent about Turkey’s EU Minister Omer Celik’s statement that the Cyprus negotiations have ended.

In a written statement, Elcil noted that the Turkish officials have been using the negotiating process to gain time while trying to turn the de facto situation in North Cyprus into “integration with Turkey”. Elcil underlines that the Turkish officials “are openly showing their intentions now” adding:

Mr Akinci is watching events and leaving aside the fact that he says nothing about the colonisation activities which continue internally, he is even following, in silence, the statements by Turkish Minister Omer Celik, who thinks he has the authority to announce that the negotiations ended. […] We want to ask Mr Akinci, who remained silent about this statement: Who is the negotiator? You or the Turkish officials?
