Wildfire Crosses Border

A wildfire raging in the South (Pirgo) area was driven by high winds east across the border into the TRNC yesterday.

All nearby fire fighting teams had been deployed but had not yet managed to control the fire, even with the help of a  specialist helicopter which had been sent from Turkey.

Police, fire response teams and ambulance crews were affected by smoke, while two people severely affected by smoke were taken to Cengiz Topel Hospital.

Last night, the fire was still raging out of control, threatening the village of Yesilirmak on the western extremities of the TRNC.

However, the Governor of Kyrenia announced this morning that the fire had finally been extinguished.
