Work on Besparmak mountain tunnel begins

Work has begun on the construction of a 5-km tunnel between the Besparmak Mountains and Arapkoy.

The project, which is financed by Ankara, was announced a year ago. However, various problems delayed its start. The aim of the tunnel project is to shorten the route between the two locations, currently linked by road, from 19km to 14km.

Head of the Highways Department Nihat Erduran, said that geological research will take place in the area and added that the project will be competed in two months.

Speaking against the project, Nazim Kasot, professor at the Near East University, said that constructing the tunnel would create environmental damage to the Besparmak region.
