The fire started in the South and swept across the border to Yesilirmak. As it crossed the buffer zone, police cabins and even the flags were burnt down.
President Eroglu who visited the disaster area, stated that there had been three fires originating from the South in the Pirgo area. He asked if this was more than a coincidence and asked for a review of the facts.
The fire eventually burnt down 850 hectares, the equivalent of 925 football fields and around 200,000 trees were destroyed.
