Zero Waste Movement Launched

Zero Waste marathon - Bogaz

The initiative known as the “Zero Waste Garbage Collection Marathon” kicked off at the Kyrenia Boğaz Picnic site with great enthusiasm on Sunday, BRTK reports. In just one day, a remarkable 200 kilograms of plastic waste and glass were diligently gathered by volunteers.

Among the participants was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, Fikri Ataoğlu, who emphasised the ethical attempts to leave a cleaner and healthier environment for the forthcoming generations.

Under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment of the TRNC, the inaugural stage of this marathon took place at the Kyrenia Boğaz Picnic Site. The swift accumulation of garbage within just an hour underscored the pressing need for heightened environmental awareness across the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Ataoğlu, leading by example, distributed large garbage bags and encouraged attendees to adopt a more conscientious approach towards preserving nature.

The upcoming stages of the marathon are scheduled for May 11 in Nicosia, May 18 in Famagusta, and May 25 in Lefke/Güzelyurt. The participants who exhibit exceptional dedication in garbage collection will be honoured during a ceremony on World Environment Day, June 5, at the historic Kyrenia Harbour.

Three distinct categories await recognition: teams with the highest garbage collection, those gathering the largest amount of recyclable waste, and individuals collecting the most glass. A substantial prize fund of 40,000 TL awaits the winners.

Groups of four can register for the marathon through the Youth Federation’s social media accounts or a dedicated application, extending the opportunity for broader community involvement in this meaningful endeavour.
