The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Elizabeth Spehar, will hold separate meetings with the two Cypriot community leaders before she visits New York to brief the UN Security Council.
Spehar met with President Nicos Anastasiades in the morning and will meet with President Mustafa Akinci at 3pm this afternoon.
She will brief the UN Security Council on 22 January. The Council will convene on 30 January to discuss whether or not to extend the mandate for UNFICYP for a further six months.
Spehar is also expected to meet with UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo and the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean Pierre Lacroix.
Following which she will fly on to Washington DC to discuss with US officials the Cyprus problem and the extension of the UNFICYP mandate.
UNFICYP which has been operating in Cyprus since 1964, is one of the UN’s longest serving missions.
